Sure, the car does look different, there is a 3.8 liter flat-six as well as the 3.6 unit we all know the smaller one is uprated. The suspension has been improved mechanically, and benefits from continuously adjustable dampers. Solid development is what you get. And you get more help to cover the ground faster and keep the car on track.

As always, the 911 is fast. Although the new models released so far both lack turbochargers they can still reach top speeds of 177 and 182 mph. No 155 mph limiters here. The cars get to 60 mph in about 5 seconds, and 125 mph in around the 17 second mark. Combine that with the fact that the 911 is the most practical of all supercars, and you can see why the engineers and marketers at Porsche didn't want to change too much. It is still not very wide, and is taller than most supercars.

Still rear-engined?

'Still rear-engined', you wonder? Yup. There are just too many satisfied customers out there to risk changing that, even though the rear-engined layout is dynamically inferior to a mid-engined layout, which was adopted for the Boxster. There is just too much weight at the rear for the best handling and braking.

However, in the past, by adopting much wider rear tires than front ones, and with other wizardry, Porsche has been able to overcome this disadvantage. There is now more electronics to help us all drive 911s faster and more safely.

Restyled, but it's a new body

Porsche wanted to make the car be clearly recognizable as a 911, but better in all respects. The 997 is a completely new body, and it looks it; it's wider than the old one, and the extra width makes it look more powerful. At the front, it wasn't a return to the old headlamps instead of the odd but clean shape of the previous model as some observers have suggested. It's true that the lamps are oval, but whereas the old ones protruded at the front of separate fenders, the new ones are much flatter. They also slope back more sharply, with the nose merging more with the fenders than before.

And it looks terrific!

At the front, the three low grilles replace one wide one of the previous 911 Carrera. The back end has flared wheel arches, a large louvred engine cover, which also lifts up to act as a spoiler, and higher rear lamps. Forget the details, just look at the lines of this supercar. It looks terrific!

Low wind resistance and lift

'Mere details,' you're saying, and who could argue? As usual, the engineers at Weissach have paid a lot of attention to the detail design to reduce both wind resistance and lift. The drag coefficient has been reduced from 0.30 to 0.28, which is very good, and there is now almost no lift at high speed.

One important but invisible change is the ducting of the outlets from the twin radiators. Air now goes straight into the open part of the wheel arch, instead of heading straight for the wide tires and having to find the way out. There is also a full under tray beneath the power train, with small air inlets to the gearbox and axle gear housing.

Porsche engineers pay more attention to weight than most, and although the body is steel as on all mainstream Porsches the hood is now aluminum, which has saved 13 lb in weight. The new engines are also slightly lighter than the old one.

Inside, there is a new instrument cluster, which is easier to read, with the rev counter right in the middle. The steering wheel has a large padded boss, and the central console now has space for a navigation display. It all looks pretty neat.

Revised engines now up to 3.8 liters from the boxer six

Of course, the heart of any Porsche is its magnificent engine, and the new 911 Carrera and Carrera S are no exceptions. There are 3.6 and 3.8 liter flat-six engines a super arrangement for a sports car. There's a bit more power, and the car hasn't had to be made bigger for a bigger power train. Thank goodness Porsche resisted the temptation of building the new 911 around a 5 liter V-8 or something.

Anyway, these engines have been developed further for more power and torque, so the performance at normal road speeds is just as hot as when racing up to 7,000 rpm. Of course, they are both all-aluminum units, with four valves per cylinder.

One feature not found on many cars is integrated dry-sump lubrication. The oil is pumped away from the sump into tanks, and then delivered as needed to the engine. This means that oil gets exactly where needed and that it doesn't slop around away from the pick-up on fast cornering as can happen with a normal wet sump. That might seem a detail and an expensive one but it could be vital in protecting your engine. It also makes the engine lower.

Plenty of power with a new type of variable valve timing

These new engines churn out plenty of power: 325 bhp at 6,800 rpm for the 3.6, and 355 bhp at 6,600 rpm for the 3.8, with the red line at 7,300 rpm. Maximum torque of the smaller engine is 273 lb ft at 4,250 rpm, while the bigger one can turn out 295 lb ft at 4,600 rpm. Plenty of mid-range power.

The biggest innovation in the new engines is the use of VarioCam Plus variable valve timing. The earlier VarioCam system changes the opening point of the valves, but VarioCam Plus has dual cams actuating each valve one operates at low speeds, and the other at high speeds. This is similar to the VTEC system pioneered by Honda.

Very high compression ratio

Amazingly, the 3.8 litre engine has a compression ratio of 11.8:1, which improves power and fuel consumption 10:1 is the maximum on most engines these days, but with the aid of special knock sensors, Porsche can go much higher; it's 11.3:1 on the 3.6 liter engine. These levels would have been unthinkable ten years ago.

Low-speed performance is also improved by modifications to the intake system, and the use of knock sensors that can detect which cylinder is about to knock, and adjust the ignition system accordingly. Certainly, these seem to be pretty masterful engines.

Deep-throated sporty sound from 911 Carrera S

To improved the rortiness of the engine noise on the Carrera S, there's a thing called a Helmholtz resonator built into the intake system. It resonates between 5,000 and 6,000 rpm to give the engine the deep throated roar we all associate with powerful engines. You'll enjoy that.

Because of the extra torque produced by these engines and other versions that will be forthcoming in the future, they are coupled to a new six-speed gearbox. Although the gears and shafts are larger than before, the weight has not been increased. Better synchromesh means that you don't need to move the lever so far to shift gear, too.

There is also a Tiptronic five-speed automatic on offer. Shifting is faster than before, and shift speeds have been increased to 7,200 rpm from 1st to 2nd, for example. And it has various modes of operation, so you can drive fast or very fast.

Electronics improve suspension

The suspension has been changed in detail only, but now gets plenty of electronics to improve ride comfort and handling. The multi-link rear suspension has been set to give more negative camber, and a side benefit is the 25% more anti-squat effect on acceleration.

Rack-and-pinion steering with variable ratio is a step in the right direction. There are only 2.62 turns lock to lock instead of 2.98 but the ratio around the straight ahead position is the same as before. At high speeds, the steering is forgiving, but when full lock is required, the driver can get it quickly.

PASM or sports suspension you choose

Strangely, there are two electronic suspension options. The 911 Carrera S comes as standard with PASM, an active suspension system, but the sports suspension is an option on the 911 Carrera, or instead of PASM on the S. So what will these do for you?

PASM has Normal and Sport modes. In normal mode, the damping is softer, which is better on long journeys, and as you'd expect, in sport mode the damping is firmer, reducing body and allowing the driver to corner faster. But it gets better: in Normal the dampers get progressively stiffer as the driver starts to hustle a bit.

Also, when the driver suddenly turns the wheel as when changing lanes the dampers are stiffened. The dampers are also stiffened during cornering and braking. To ensure that the wheels retain grip on bumpy surfaces when braking, the dampers are softened a little after a short period. Overall, the combination of adjustable dampers and a comprehensive control system, getting information from several sensors, improves the suspension quite a lot. You don't need to be quite such an expert driver to get the most out of the car as before.

What about the sports suspension?

The sports suspension is more traditional: you get stiffer springs and dampers not adjustable. The suspension is lowered 0.79 in (20 mm), and you get thicker anti-roll bars. On top of that, the different is fitted with a mechanical l lock. This one is for the sporty driver, who will relish the reduction in under steer when accelerating out of bends, for example.

To cope with the extra power, the Porsche Carrera S has larger brakes than the Carrera, and the discs are cross drilled. On both models, Porsche's ceramic discs and special pads are available. These reduce unsprung weight by 34 lb, are more resistant to fade, and last longer than normal brakes. But they're expensive.

Stability control

ABS and traction control are combined in the Porsche Stability Management (PSM), which helps the driver maintain control when cornering very fast. It can be switched off by the confident driver.

Actually, it sounds a lot of fun, because as you drive faster, so the system modifies its reactions. For example, it allows you to spin the wheels a little more coming out of a corner, and also lets the rear end slide out more than normal. All under control but not your control!

Finally, the car is about 10 lb lighter than the previous model. That doesn't sound much, but the car is larger, and most cars are about 50-100 lb heavier than their predecessors, so Porsche is doing well. Not as light as if they had adopted an aluminum frame, of course.

Driving impressions

It's just natural; slipping into the new 911 is like putting on a favorite pair of gloves. The wheel comes to hand, you can see the instruments clearly, and the view ahead is good you don't get the prominent fenders of the old 911s, but the way ahead is still clearly defined.

You ease the clutch in, and it is as smooth as silk, taking up the drive just like on a shopping car. And the 911 is far from ordinary; low speed ride over ridged surfaces is a bit on the harsh side, but as soon as you get the chance to put your foot down, off you go with the noise level increasing smoothly with the revs, and you're being pushed back into the seat. Just as you'd expect.

Turn in is quick and responsive. You don't have to wait for the steering to wake up, it just turns into the bend, the car riding very flat. You can push hard into a tight bend, and accelerate hard out, because the PSM helps you corner fast.

The steering, now with variable ratio, is well weighted, and you can keep your eye on how fast you're going with the digital speedometer. It is inset in the large central rev-counter, which tells you what you really want to know. Brakes seemed good, too. Some feel that Porsche is going soft adding PSM, but you can turn it off if you want. In any event this is one very, very fast car with the handling. We'll have to wait and see how it performs as a Grand Tourer.

Nevertheless, this latest 911 isn't just the latest with the 911 pedigree, but is almost certain to be a class leader, offering super performance and practicality and not at a ridiculous price.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2689638907891062382.post-76573493277006904332021-05-19T07:46:00.003-07:002023-07-22T21:06:56.098-07:00Ford Focus ST, Become The Top Hot Hatch?

Can the Focus ST become the top hot hatch? The basics are right, and with 225 bhp it has enough power to keep the front wheels busy

Ford has trumped its European rivals in the hot hatch business by digging out the Volvo five-cylinder 2.5 litre engine and putting it in the new Focus ST.
To give the engine the oomph you need for a hot hatch, Ford has added a turbocharger and some cool mapping to give 225 bhp at 6,100 rpm, and - get this 236 lb ft (320 Nm) at 1,600 rpm.

Ford claims a top speed of 150 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 6.5 seconds, which is not bad for this type of car actually a bit quicker than its obvious rivals.

Massive torque from very low speed

Not only is that a huge amount of torque to push through the front wheels, but peak torque at 1,600 rpm means the engine should pull the fairly light Focus away promptly at any speed you like and keep going to over 6,000 rpm. The engine is now called a Duratec unit. It is a modern design with aluminum cylinder block and head and four valves per cylinder. With 225 bhp from 2.5 litres the engine won't be over stressed.

As you'd expect, the power is transmitted through a six-speed manual box, but remember this engine and gearbox are mounted across the body, so a good deal of shoehorning must have been needed to get it all in five-cylinders are longer than four, and six-speed boxes take up quite a bit of room, too.

Looks the part with a new front end

With a different front end, with hardly any bumper as such, a big air intake below the grille, and two lower side grilles, the car looks a bit different from your bog-standard Focus. The two little side grilles are repeated at the back as well. New 18-inch alloy wheels of a new pattern also set the ST apart, as do the 225/40 tires and 8 inch wide rims. Should have plenty of cornering power with those fat tyres and wheels.

The brakes are also quite large 12.6 inch front and 11 inch rear discs with ABS, of course.

There's nothing very special about the suspension, apart from a lot of detail tuning, as the car gets the standard MacPherson struts at the front, and double wishbone suspension at the rear. That double wishbone set-up gives very good wheel control , but is lighter and cheaper to build than the multi-links used by some competitors.

Stiffer suspension

To increase stiffness of the front end, an extra cross member has been added between the strut towers, and the front and rear springs are 30% stiffer than in the standard car. At the rear, a stiffer anti-roll bar is used to reduce under steer. In addition, the car rides an inch lower than the other models, which reduces roll.

10 seconds faster round the Nurburgring than the superb Focus RS

Ford claims that with the wide spread of power and better handling, the ST can lap the Nurburgring 10 seconds faster than the excellent Focus RS, which is no mean achievement. Whether it matches the RS on other roads remains to be seen, but the Nurburgring is becoming the benchmark for the car industry these days, with most makers claiming their cars are very fast round that very tough circuit.

Unique interior, Recaro seats

The interior is unique to ST, with a new instrument panel with separate minor instruments in the top of the fascia. The three-spoke wheel and gear lever look the part, too. More important to keeping you in control when you're cornering fast are the Recaro sports seats with plenty of lateral support.

The base model comes without stability control or traction control, and so is likely to appeal to real enthusiasts, but these features are included in the two more expensive versions. The base model will also be lighter.

How does the Focus ST stack up against its rivals? It is the most powerful except for the Astra VXR which has 240 bhp from its turbo engine. Even so, the Focus ST should outperform the Astra VXR, Golf GTI and Renault Megane 225 but only by a whisker.

It is also the lightest of these. It weighs 168 lb less than the Astra, 84 lb less than the Megane 225 and 42 lb less than the Golf. Whether the Focus ST is a better car to drive will depend on the handling and steering, and whether the weight of that five-cylinder engine up front will allow it to handle well in all conditions.

Looking for more power? Well, there is a black sheep on the horizon - the BMW 130i with 256 bhp form a three-litre engine and rear-wheel drive. That could top all these front-drivers but at a price.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2689638907891062382.post-50119467667562270482021-03-13T02:36:00.008-08:002023-07-22T21:07:04.786-07:00Alfa Romeo GT Coupe, 3.2 Liter V-6 Engine

Alfa Romeo, ah there was a name to conjure with - and here comes the Alfa Romeo GT sports coupe to raise the name again. Henry Ford is reputed to have said that he lifted his hat every time he saw one (which wasn't often).

In the 1930s and 1950s, Alfa Romeo was revered in much the same way as Ferrari is now. And in the 60s there were some super Alfa Romeo sports cars, but after that Fiat decreed Alfa Romeo cars should change to front-wheel drive, which went against what Alfa stood for. So things went downhill.

Now, it looks as if Alfa Romeo is on the up and up. First, this Alfa GT is lovely looking car, secondly, it has the right power trains, and thirdly, the suspension and steering are right. Next comes the shorter Brera - more of a sports car and as Alfa is now in the same sub-group as Maserati, it must have a more sporty future.

Alfa Romeo GT Coupe Styled by Bertone

So what about this GT? Styled by Bertone, it's an elegant coupe that makes others look dull. The Alfa three-piece grille sits in the low nose, which sweeps up to the quite high scuttle and steeply raked windscreen. There are the typical Alfa Romeo sculptured sides, and despite the sloping fastback, there is good headroom in the back. The short and neat tail also provides quite a bit of luggage space. It is a compact car, just 176 inches long.

There are 2.0 liter and 3.2 liter engines available in the Alfa Romeo GT Coupe, and mine had the 3.2 liter V-6, which is also used in the larger Alfa Romeo cars. It is a modern aluminum unit with twin ohc per bank and four valves per cylinder. Maximum power is 240 bhp at 6,200 rpm, and the engine revs freely to the cut-off at 7,000 rpm. Maximum torque is 213 lb ft (289 Nm) at 4,800 rpm, making this quite a sporty engine, ideal for a sports car.

As the Alfa Romeo GT is built on the 156 under body, it has a rather longer wheelbase than you want on a GT, but that does give you more space. Jump into the low driving seat, and first impressions are not bad. The wheel feels just right, and the black trim relieved by dark grey looks fine. At first, the rear window looks tiny, but actually rear vision is good.

It took me a bit of time to get the seat in the right position for the pedals, so that my foot was attacking the clutch pedal at the right angle, but then I was ready. The engine springs to life with a sporty thrum, promising an exciting drive. I drove off, noting that the gearshift was smooth, and before long I was cruising along the motorway. It cruises quietly, with 3,000 rpm putting you at 75 mph in sixth, and giving you a relaxed drive.

Tracks well on twisty roads

On a twisty bit of road, I noticed that the car was moving along well, going where I asked. The steering felt pretty direct, which is what you'd expect with only 2.2 turns lock-to-lock, but equally important, the car tracked well too.

To cope with the extra power of the 3.2 liter engine, this model gets stiffer springs and anti-roll bars, and it own damper settings. The brakes are also larger, and to give good cornering power, 225/45 Michelin tires are used with smart 17 inch alloy wheels.

Car lopes along well on fast roads

The Alfa Romeo GT Coupe proved an excellent long distance cruiser, although the ride is hard, but it has reasonable rather than good seats maybe designed for shorter people than me as the car lopes along in a relaxed manner. If you need to overtake, you slot down to third, and the engine starts to roar at about 3,500 rpm, pushing you forward very quickly.

Try to do a standing start, and you'll get a bit of wheel spin before the traction control and stability control kicks in, but the car tears ahead, getting to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 150 mph. Quick. In the lower ratios, the acceleration is spectacular, with the car charging forward, and holding the line well.

The six-speed gearbox has a slick shift, although the actual selection is not as positive as some. Not that it causes any bother. Shifts are made quickly, whichever gear you want. The clutch is quite heavy, though.

Great drive on twisty roads

Once I started pushing the GT along some twistier roads, the car came into its own. Drop into third, and the revs build into the power range, and off the car roars; shift down into second, you're likely to get the traction control working quite a lot on wet roads, this being about as much power as you want to push through the front-wheels. But the Alfa Romeo GT still accelerates strongly.

With that large engine up front, the car under steers, but turns in much better than many other front-drivers, thanks to the good suspension design. On main roads, you find there is plenty of cornering power to motor fast, and the car still behaves well on twistier roads, and rides well over switchbacks, the dampers controlling it well. In fact, this is where the car is most at home, accelerating fast from the bends, braking well, turning in pretty well, and cornering on rails most of the time.

If you accelerate through a sharp corner the under steer does build up eventually, but is not that bad. If you go into a corner too fast, the under steer scrubs off the speed, and you just slow down - thanks to the stability control.

However, go into a corner at the right speed, accelerate to build up some under steer, then lift off a little at the apex, and it turns in nicely, going round with neutral handling, allowing you to get the power on early as you leave the bend. It all feels very controllable, just as a sports car should.

Good steering….

I liked the steering, which is well weighted and is direct. It has good feel with the bumps and the build up of under steer shows up well. The brakes are also good, but the ride is not as muffled as on some competitors, especially on ripply surfaces. Here, the ride is very hard, and shocks like minor potholes, come straight through with a 'clonk'.but a few quirks

Also on the debit side, the Alfa GT Coupe has a few quirky aspects that I didn't find that easy to live with. Night driving is not good; the dipped beam of the headlamps is surprisingly weak, and the instruments change to red on white which is not very clear, particularly since the speed meter shows speed in 20 mph divisions only. The rev-counter is OK.

The situation is made worse because there is a large digital display in the middle which distracts you from what you want to see, and which shows nothing important Alfa Romeo is by no means alone in putting unimportant information right in the middle of the instrument panel. Then, the audio unit has rather quirky controls.

Against that, the Alfa Romeo GT Coupe is a fun car to drive, whether you are cruising along or hustling round twisty roads. And when you finish for the day, and park it on the drive, it looks just great especially in red, and makes a great four-seater sports car.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2689638907891062382.post-25882999653623422472021-03-04T22:26:00.003-08:002023-07-22T21:07:17.183-07:00Speed Limits: How Fast Can You Go?

Posted speed limits are something that drivers routinely flout, especially on isolated open roads where traffic is light, enforcement is minimal or non-existent and when time is a factor. Beginning in the mid-1970s, the federal government legally limited highway speeds to 55 mph, setting a ridiculously low threshold that was ignored with abandon.

State Laws

Federal laws were loosened in 1987 and completely done away with in 1995, returning speed limit jurisdiction back to where it belongs: the states. Today, all 50 states feature posted speed limits above 55 mph with some stretches of roads in Texas allowing 85 mph.

East of the Mississippi River, speed limits above 70 mph have not been found, but starting this month the state of Maine is raising the bar to 75 mph, at least on one section of highway. A 100-mile stretch of I-95 from Old Town to Houlton has had its speed limit raised from 65 mph to the higher limit, reflecting the driving habits of Mainers. That section of the highway is in the far northern area of the Pine Street state, just shy of the New Brunswick, Canada, border.

Posted Limits

Speed limits across the United States vary depending on the road you’re on and location. Typically, states mandate 25 mph near schools and hospitals, incrementally raising speeds above 35 mph away from congested areas. In the northeast, highways in urban areas most often have 55 mph limits, with top speeds of 60 to 70 mph on interstates.

Higher speed limits can be found west of the Mississippi, with many states allowing drivers to go 75 mph. In Utah, portions of I-15 allow drivers to travel at 80 mph. In Texas, a top speed of 85 mph is allowed on certain remote roads with rural sections of I-10 and I-20 permitting speeds of 80 mph.

Lower Limits

Some states with wide open expanses of highway still restrict drivers to 65 mph. Besides those in the northeast, Illinois and Wisconsin have posted limits of 65 mph. Alaska, the most remote state of all, also limits your top speed to 65 mph. Hawaii, with minimal stretches of open road, has a state speed limit of 60 mph, the lowest in the nation.

Posted speed limits are simply a guide and drivers can go below these limits by staying in the right lane and allowing others to pass. Weather is a factor too – adjust your speed accordingly whenever visibility and road conditions change. Lastly, if your tires are not up to the task, then keep your speeds down. Aged or worn tires should be replaced regardless of your speed and personal driving habits.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2689638907891062382.post-65371769781629544432021-02-24T23:23:00.003-08:002023-07-22T21:07:26.049-07:00 Honda Accord, Modern Features And The Latest Technology Innovation

Honda's flagship luxury sedan which is the ninth generation uses a 4-cylinder DOHC engine in line with 16 valve i-VTEC which has a combustion capacity of 2,356 cc which is claimed to be able to give off a maximum power of 176 PS at 6,200 RPM with a maximum torque of 225 Nm at 4,000 RPM. The Honda Accord is channeled through a 5-speed automatic transmission which makes acceleration smoother and faster.

With this power, this Honda Accord feels very tough and fast when driving on smooth tracks typical of urban roads.
